Yep, it's December by the Calendar. Time to protect the dahlias for the winter. When they turn black and gross, cut them down to the ground. If they are to be left in the ground they should be covered with mulch, a plastic bag or tarp could be placed on the ground under the mulch to help extra water from going down into the crown of the tubers.
Mulching can be mounding dirt, sawdust, hay, leaves anything to protect them from freezing. About 6 inches should be good. If you want to dig and store them, do it now. See our Care and Culture section for more information.
